Overview:
The Philippines is one of the most basketball-obsessed countries in the world, with a huge and passionate NBA fan base.
Sport Design Australia partnered with the NBA to create the visual identity for Republika ng NBA - a dedicated brand platform celebrating the connection between Filipino culture and basketball.
The project included a suite of bespoke logo lock-ups, a custom wordmark and a broader visual identity designed to live across digital content, merchandise, live events and Filipino Heritage Nights throughout the NBA season.
Challenge:
The challenge was finding the right balance between two very recognisable worlds.
Republika ng NBA needed to feel distinctly Filipino and give local fans something they could genuinely connect with, without simply applying obvious cultural references to an existing NBA look.
At the same time, it still needed to sit naturally within the wider NBA brand and feel immediately connected to basketball.
More importantly, this wasn't being created as a one-off campaign. The identity needed enough depth and flexibility to become an ongoing platform - capable of working across different formats, teams, players, events and content throughout the season, while still feeling recognisably Republika ng NBA.

Solution:
We started by looking for visual references that could naturally connect Filipino culture with the language of basketball.
The colours of the Philippine flag became a key part of the palette, while traditional Visayan art and patterns were combined with familiar elements from the game itself - including court markings, lines and shapes.
From there, we developed a suite of custom Republika ng NBA logo lock-ups and a bespoke wordmark, supported by a broader library of modular design elements.
The ‘Golden Ball’ hero graphic, repeating Visayan patterns, court lines, borders, framing devices and other graphic elements could be mixed, layered and adapted depending on the format and message.
Rather than locking the NBA into one hero look, we built a visual toolkit with enough structure to keep the brand recognisable and enough flexibility for its internal teams to keep creating with it.
The result brought Filipino cultural references and familiar NBA design cues together in a way that felt considered, ownable and built specifically for the audience it represented.
Outcome:
Republika ng NBA launched with a dedicated identity that gave the NBA a consistent way to celebrate Filipino basketball culture across social, merchandise, events and Filipino Heritage Nights.
More importantly, the project created something the NBA could continue to use beyond a single campaign.
The modular system gave internal teams a clear creative foundation while still leaving room for the identity to evolve across different players, teams, stories and activations.
For a global brand like the NBA, the project showed how a master brand can be adapted for a specific market without losing what makes either side distinctive - creating something that feels genuinely local while still unmistakably NBA.
