Overview:
The St. George Illawarra Dragons were heading to Las Vegas for the first time, taking the club and its fans onto the global stage at Allegiant Stadium.
Sport Design Australia was brought in to design a special-edition jersey for the occasion, working closely with the Dragons’ executive team and Classic Sportswear to take it from initial concept through to production.
With a tight turnaround and one of the biggest moments in the club’s recent history ahead, the goal was to create something that still felt unmistakably Dragons, but different enough to feel genuinely special.
Challenge:
The challenge wasn’t simply designing a jersey that looked good on the field. It needed to be something the players were proud to wear, while giving fans a genuine reason to buy another Dragons jersey.
Most supporters already owned jerseys featuring the famous Red V, club colours, sponsors and familiar branding. For Vegas, we needed to create something that still respected that history, but felt different enough to become a piece of the occasion itself.
There were also the practical realities of designing a professional playing jersey. Commercial partners needed appropriate visibility, manufacturing requirements had to be considered and everything needed to move from concept to production within a very short timeframe.
The opportunity was to find a creative idea strong enough to bring all of those requirements together without overcomplicating what makes a Dragons jersey so recognisable in the first place.

Solution:
We developed the Fire & Ice Edition, using the jersey to tell a story about the Dragons and their first trip to Las Vegas rather than filling it with obvious Vegas references.
The concept came through in the details, allowing the jersey to reward a closer look while keeping the famous Red V and overall Dragons identity at the centre of the design.
A major part of the process was also looking beyond the jersey graphic itself. We felt the different colours and treatments of the existing sponsor logos were competing with the design, so we worked with the Dragons’ executive team to push for a single all-red treatment across every commercial partner.
Getting every partner on board was a significant change, but it gave the jersey a much cleaner and more considered finish. Sponsors still had the visibility they required, while the overall design felt more unified, premium and collectible.
The combination of storytelling, subtle detailing and a simplified commercial treatment gave fans something they hadn’t seen from a Dragons jersey before, without losing what made it feel like the Dragons.
Outcome:
The Fire & Ice Edition went on to become the highest-selling jersey in St. George Illawarra Dragons history.
For us, that result was a pretty strong validation of the original thinking: treat the jersey as more than another piece of playing kit and give fans something that feels genuinely worth owning.
Seeing players and supporters wearing it throughout Las Vegas and inside Allegiant Stadium brought the idea full circle, while its commercial success showed what can happen when concept, storytelling and attention to the smaller details all work together.
It also showed the value of looking beyond the immediate design brief. From the jersey concept through to how commercial partners were integrated, every decision played a part in creating something that felt special to the occasion - and ultimately something fans wanted to buy.
